Freud doesn't know the half of it...

So, since I seem incapable of pulling out the old story, even when I have time...two weeks unscheduled coming up... hmm. On to last night’s dream:

Sandy and I have just moved into a much smaller apartment – it appears to be a large(ish) studio. We each have our own beds and an old dresser that we’re sharing, left by the previous tenant whom we know is a dead drug addict (I blame watching Surveillance for that.) But we’ve got hardwood floors and a large picture window with curved glass that overlooks a nice lawn (the lawn could use a little upkeep, but there’s a stone fountain) and I’m mildly depressed about the size of the place but it’s not all bad. Laundry in the basement – and we’re unpacking all of our belongings (which seems to include nothing but sheets, clothes, and cutlery.) I’m wondering where all my furniture and stuff is though…

Anyhoo, we’re doing laundry, making the beds, and there’s a lot of thumping noises from outside the apartment (from the basement mostly, and I’m thinking – oh, haunted house dream) when suddenly two tyrannosaurus rex’s try to get into the apartment (which they do without damaging the walls, door frames or floors, bless ‘em. But they’re roaring and being pretty scary. That’s when Jonathan (who just shows up) starts playing the acoustic guitar and it turns the dinosaurs into dust. Very convenient, because hauling out dinosaur corpses would be hard, smelly work, and hard to explain to the authorities, but sweeping up massive amounts of dust in an old building? Pretty typical. Of course, in real life, Jonathan plays the flute, so you think a more direct pied piper reference would have happened, but, ya know, dreams.

Over the trauma of the dinosaur invasion, I’m now trying to pick a color to paint the walls and I decide I’d like to run to the paint store before work, but we’re already running a little behind so we have to dash to get to work. Dream logic again and although we’re exiting our apartment building, it is now the place the bus dropped us off, and we’ll have to walk the rest of the way to work. I’m upset now because a) my job is not in the City and b) we have to cross a very busy four lane highway to get to the flooded sidewalk that we follow to get to work. We (and by we I mean Sandy, me, and all of our co-workers, and Steve) cross the highway. I’m grumbling because I think work should have a shuttle that picks us up at the bus stop if we’re going to have a cross a highway, but apparently, it’s my first day, so I’m not grumbling too loud. Until Steve announces that work starts at 8:00 am, and we shouldn’t be late. Then the tears begin: I quit my job at the Opera for this?! No one told me I’d have to come in at 8! I like my job at the Opera, I don’t want to work for high tech any more! I don’t want to work outside the City! This commute sucks! I’m wondering if I can call the Opera’s CFO and beg for my job back. Much unhappiness. We get in the building and ya know, a modicum of common sense returns to me: this is the job I have now, let’s not get fired before I have a new one (or my old one back), and my brain has decided to take some pity on me, because the building is full of grand pianos. I don’t know why, because I thought the biz was high tech – but if that requires grand pianos, I’m for it.

I wander the floor wondering what to do, wailing to Steve quietly that I want to work at the Opera and why did he trick me into quitting? Then I decide to do some laundry. (yes brain, I know I need to do laundry) and I go into the basement and Sandy's there doing her laundry too. Then I can’t decide if our apartment is in the basement of this building and I’m further horrified to think I may live in the same building I work. I don’t want to come home for work and still be at work! I finally decide it’s not. During all this emoting, I go back upstairs and wander around my new co-workers and their piano work stations and I happen to glance out the window where, although I realize it’s now close to midnight (!), the sky is as bright as day and there are all kinds of war ships flying over head. But these war ships are war planes and helicopters that have been lost at sea and they’re covered in sea weed and mud. I’m thinking this is all very strange but no one seems to notice but me and this is my first day, how do I know this little phantasm parade doesn’t happen every day/night?

Then the wind kicks up, really, really strongly, and other people notice the war ships above us and the whole High Noon at Midnight scenario. Steve gets a wind sock (!) (I think we call him MacGyver at this point) and steps outside to test the weather and determine what’s going on. He comes back in, all grim. He informs us that we have to get out and now! He’s got his car (despite take the bus) so he’ll take Sandy and I back to our place. Just then zombies start to appear at the windows and doors.

I dash down to the basement to get Sandy as she's still doing laundry (I know, brain, I know.) We get upstairs and Steve’s collecting dishes (yes, I know, brain, I still have to put away the serving platters from Festivus.)

I glance out the window, and a black cadillac with dark windows pulls up, tires squealing, into the parking lot. It’s the parents of one our co-workers. She runs out and the zombies try to stop her, and although they grab her, she’s able to pull away and get into the car, which promptly takes off.

There are now zombies blocking the front door and all the windows. I head towards one of the windows and try to open it, but a zombie on the other side pushes his way in. The zombies don’t try to eat anyone’s brains or even get angry, they’re just trying to keep people from leaving. They’re not all corpse-like either. They just appear to be dressed in out of fashion clothes (dingy pastels, fedoras – like some muted version of the 80s.) Mostly they behave as if they’re really stoned. We start to try to reason with them since they appear to be reluctant to actually do any harm and no one has actually been hurt. (Us: “Dude, we’re just trying to get home. It’s late.” Zombies: “I know man, but I’m sorry, I’m not supposed to let you leave.”) At this point, I’m thinking if we invite this zombie back to our place for a little greenery, he’d happily abandon his post and let us go.

Alas, we are not to know, cuz that’s when my alarm went off.

What can it all mean? And why couldn't it be, with all the various horror/sci fi elements be a Supernatural/Torchwood crossover? Prime opportunity squandered on worrying about my laundry. Which isn't all that urgent...

Really, Team DE Mackinaw spends an inordinate amount of time yelling things at the TV screen like: "Close your mouth, Dean! I can't follow the plot!" There's probably a 12-step program we could join. We won't.

Also, I make up lipstick names Dean wears which, of course, depends on episode, mood, and lighting:

Coma Coral
Pouty Pink
Imperiled Rose
Morning After Blush
Bruised Berry

There's lots more. And Sam doesn't get left out either, but I gotta head out.

Soliticiting sex through text messaging... and lying liars who lie

OK, having completed our pilgrimage to the Big Ball of Twine (more on this later), an honorary member of Team!DE_Mackinaw gets a voicemail from some guy who says the following (rather shakily):

"Hi, I'm in Newport visiting from Colorado, my number is 719.... I'm sorry, new phone, I'm nervous. Yeah, um. Call me."

And apparently left the wrong number, because he called back with a corrected number: "I'm sorry, 719..."

So, we thought of many clever but cruel responses and settled on the more humane text message of "Hey, got your message. Think you got the wrong number."

He texts us back, "Sorry, my phone was lost and used all night."

The mind reels with the possibilities. How fortunate his phone returned itself to him. Now we had to fuck with him a little.

Team!DE_Mackinaw: How convenient! By the way, what are you wearing?

Poor, dumb John: Huh?

Team!DE_Mackinaw: Don't play dumb, naughty boy. What are you wearing out there in Newport?

He chickened out, poor bastard. He could have text sex with four hot chix in Litchfield, Minnesota.

Yes, we are perpetually sixteen.

Update

The first rule of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle is you don't talk about the Heisenberg uncertainty principle...

so... not much writing getting done, but many ideas popping to the surface. cuh-razy busy.

Anyhoo, Team DE_Mackinaw went ghost town hunting Sunday for the first time, so did the quick and easy stuff: China Camp and Lake Berryessa. Gorgeous weather this weekend, even so, China Camp was not over run -- must remember for when we want to dip our toes in salt water. Ocean Beach and the Bay are nearly always freezing cold...Took some photos, will try to post...

Couldn't see Monticello, because it's under Lake Berryessa, but that was a long shot anyway. Planning a full-on weekend ghost town hunting trip for the last weekend of October, complete with off-road vehicle to get to those places without paved roads (whee!). Lot's o' abandoned mining camps/towns in N. CA. May throw in some Big Foot hunting as well (or at least stop by the museum.) Regret not taking pictures of all those ghost towns in So Cal and Nevada when we went through Death Valley last summer (on our way to Rachel/Area 51).

But before all this: Big Ball of Twine Days in less than a month! We've rented an Impala. Big Ball of Twine. Grasshopper Ascension Chapel. World's Largest Statue of a Crow. This summer = cheestastic!
